Summary Verses 10:1 Cornelius a centurion of the Italian regiment shows great faith in God. 10:4 Cornelius as a vision from God to summon Peter to preach the Gospel to him. 10:9 Peter goes up to the roof to pray and has a vision from God to preach to Cornelius. 10:15 Peter is taught not to despise the gentiles. 10:34 Peter preaches the Gospel in Cornelius’s house. 10:45 The entire household is saved, is baptized and receives the Holy Ghost. 11:2 Peter being accused of going to a gentiles house explains the work of God. 11:22 Barnabas is sent to Antioch to work in the church there, this is the first place where disciples are called Christians. 11:28 Agabus foretells of a great famine that will come under the reign of Claudius Caesar.
Acts Chapter 10 10:1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 10:2 a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. 10:3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius” 10:4 And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord?” So he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God. 10:5 “Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter. 10:6 “He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.” 10:7 And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually. 10:8 So when he had explained all these things to them, he sent them to Joppa. 10:9 The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. 10:10 Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance 10:11 and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. 10:12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. 10:13 And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” 10:14 But Peter said, “Not so, Lord For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” 10:15 And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.” 10:16 This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again. 10:17 Now while Peter wondered within himself what this vision which he had seen meant, behold, the men who had been sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate. 10:18 And they called and asked whether Simon, whose surname was Peter, was lodging there. 10:19 While Peter thought about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are seeking you. 10:20 “Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.” 10:21 Then Peter went down to the men who had been sent to him from Cornelius, and said, “Yes, I am he whom you seek. For what reason have you come?” 10:22 And they said, “Cornelius the centurion, a just man, one who fears God and has a good reputation among all the nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to summon you to his house, and to hear words from you.” 10:23 Then he invited them in and lodged them. On the next day Peter went away with them, and some brethren from Joppa accompanied him. 10:24 And the following day they entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them, and had called together his relatives and close friends. 10:25 As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. 10:26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I myself am also a man.” 10:27 And as he talked with him, he went in and found many who had come together. 10:28 Then he said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean. 10:29 “Therefore I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. I ask, then, for what reason have you sent for me?” 10:30 So Cornelius said, “Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, 10:31 “and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms are remembered in the sight of God. 10:32 ‘Send therefore to Joppa and call Simon here, whose surname is Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea. When he comes, he will speak to you.’ 10:33 “So I sent to you immediately, and you have done well to come. Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God.” 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 10:35 “But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. 10:36 “The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ-He is Lord of all 10:37 *ye* know; the testimony which has spread through the whole of Judaea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached — 10:38 “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. 10:39 “And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. 10:40 “Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, 10:41 “not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. 10:42 “And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. 10:43 “To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.” 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 10:45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, 10:47 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.
Acts Chapter 11 11:1 Now the apostles and brethren who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. 11:2 And when Peter came up to Jerusalem, those of the circumcision contended with him, 11:3 saying, “You went in to uncircumcised men and ate with them” 11:4 But Peter explained it to them in order from the beginning, saying: 11:5 “I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, an object descending like a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came to me. 11:6 “When I observed it intently and considered, I saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. 11:7 “And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ 11:8 “But I said, ‘Not so, Lord For nothing common or unclean has at any time entered my mouth.’ 11:9 “But the voice answered me again from heaven, ‘What God has cleansed you must not call common.’ 11:10 “Now this was done three times, and all were drawn up again into heaven. 11:11 “At that very moment, three men stood before the house where I was, having been sent to me from Caesarea. 11:12 “Then the Spirit told me to go with them, doubting nothing. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. 11:13 “And he told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house, who said to him, ‘Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon whose surname is Peter, 11:14 ‘who will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved.’ 11:15 “And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. 11:16 “Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 11:17 “If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?” 11:18 When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.” 11:19 Now those who were scattered after the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to no one but the Jews only. 11:20 But some of them were men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching the Lord Jesus. 11:21 And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord. 11:22 Then news of these things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch. 11:23 When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord. 11:24 For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord. 11:25 Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul. 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. 11:27 And in these days prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch. 11:28 Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar. 11:29 Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. 11:30 This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
Summary Verses 8:1 A man named Saul constented to the stoning and killing of Stephen. 8:2 The godly people of the church made a great lamentation for Stephen. 8:5 Philip preaches Christ in Samaria. 8:9 Simon Magus a former practitioner of witchcraft tries to buy the power of the Holy Spirit. 8:26 Philip preaches to the Ethiopian Eunuch. 8:38 Philip baptizes the Ethiopian Eunuch after which the Lord caught him away. 9:2 Saul begins his travel to Damascus to persecute the Christians there. 9:4 On the road to Damascus Paul is knocked to the ground by Jesus and blinded for three days. 9:10 Ananias a Christian is sent by the Lord to pray for Saul to regain his sight. 9:18 Saul receives his sight, is immediately baptized and becomes a follower of Christ. 9:20 And straight away Saul preaches Jesus in the Synagogues. 9:23 The Jews who cannot refute Saul’s teaching take counsel to kill him. 9:25 Saul escapes out of the city when he is let down the wall of the city in a basket. 9:33 Peter cures a man named Aeneas of the palsy. 9:36 Peter raises Tabitha (also called Dorcas) from the dead.
Acts Chapter 8 8:1 Now Saul was consenting to his death. At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 8:2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. 8:3 As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison. 8:4 Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. 8:5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. 8:6 And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 8:7 For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. 8:8 And there was great joy in that city. 8:9 But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously practiced sorcery in the city and astonished the people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, 8:10 to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the great power of God.” 8:11 And they heeded him because he had astonished them with his sorceries for a long time. 8:12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. 8:13 Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were done. 8:14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 8:15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 8:16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 8:17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 8:18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 8:19 saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 8:20 But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money 8:21 “You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. 8:22 “Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 8:23 “For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.” 8:24 Then Simon answered and said, “Pray to the Lord for me, that none of the things which you have spoken may come upon me.” 8:25 So when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans. 8:26 Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is desert. 8:27 So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, 8:28 was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. 8:29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot.” 8:30 So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 8:31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. 8:32 The place in the Scripture which he read was this: “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before its shearer is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 8:33 In His humiliation His justice was taken away, And who will declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth.” 8:34 So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 8:36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” 8:37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 8:38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 8:39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing. 8:40 But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he preached in all the cities till he came to Caesarea.
Acts Chapter 9 9:1 Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 9:2 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 9:3 As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. 9:4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” 9:5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.” 9:6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” 9:7 And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one. 9:8 Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9:9 And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank. 9:10 Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” 9:11 So the Lord said to him, “Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying. 9:12 “And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight.” 9:13 Then Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. 9:14 “And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.” 9:15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. 9:16 “For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.” 9:17 And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 9:18 Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized. 9:19 So when he had received food, he was strengthened. Then Saul spent some days with the disciples at Damascus. 9:20 Immediately he preached the Christ in the synagogues, that He is the Son of God. 9:21 Then all who heard were amazed, and said, “Is this not he who destroyed those who called on this name in Jerusalem, and has come here for that purpose, so that he might bring them bound to the chief priests?” 9:22 But Saul increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews who dwelt in Damascus, proving that this Jesus is the Christ. 9:23 Now after many days were past, the Jews plotted to kill him. 9:24 But their plot became known to Saul. And they watched the gates day and night, to kill him. 9:25 Then the disciples took him by night and let him down through the wall in a large basket. 9:26 And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple. 9:27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. And he declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. 9:28 So he was with them at Jerusalem, coming in and going out. 9:29 And he spoke boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus and disputed against the Hellenists, but they attempted to kill him. 9:30 When the brethren found out, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him out to Tarsus. 9:31 Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied. 9:32 Now it came to pass, as Peter went through all parts of the country, that he also came down to the saints who dwelt in Lydda. 9:33 There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden eight years and was paralyzed. 9:34 And Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed.” Then he arose immediately. 9:35 So all who dwelt at Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord. 9:36 At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did. 9:37 But it happened in those days that she became sick and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. 9:38 And since Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them. 9:39 Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them. 9:40 But Peter put them all out, and knelt down and prayed. And turning to the body he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. 9:41 Then he gave her his hand and lifted her up; and when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive. 9:42 And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed on the Lord. 9:43 So it was that he stayed many days in Joppa with Simon, a tanner.
Summary Verses 5:1 Ananias is being deceitful and trying to hold back part of his profit yet claim to the Apostles he is donating all that he has. 5:5 The Holy Spirit strikes Ananias dead for lying to God. 5:9 Sapphira his wife, not know what had happened to her husband continues the lie. 5:10 The Holy Spirit strikes Sapphira dead for lying to God. 5:12 By the hands of the Apostles many miracles were done. 5:14 Through the work of the Holy Spirit the faith and numbers in the church are increased. 5:17 The chief Priests and the Sadducees place the Apostles in prison. 5:19 The Apostles are delivered by an Angel. 5:26 The Apostles are arrested for preaching Christ and are brought before the counsel. 5:36 Gamaliel intervenes and the men are beaten and released. 5:41 The Apostles glorify God. 6:1 In those days the number of Christians grew. 6:3 Men are appointed to the office of the deaconship. Seven men are chosen. 6:8 Of whom Stephen being full of faith is one of them and he works great miracles among the people. 6:9 The Jews argue with Stephen however his wisdom overcomes them arrest him. 7:1 Stephen is taken to the chief Priest where show the people through the scriptures Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah. 7:54 The chief Priest and the Jews gnashing their teeth in anger stone him to death.
Acts Chapter 5 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. 5:2 And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 5:3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 5:4 “While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.” 5:5 Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. 5:6 And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him. 5:7 Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 5:8 And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?” She said, “Yes, for so much.” 5:9 Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 5:10 Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband. 5:11 So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things. 5:12 And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch. 5:13 Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly. 5:14 And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, 5:15 so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. 5:16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed. 5:17 Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with indignation, 5:18 and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison. 5:19 But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 5:20 “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.” 5:21 And when they heard that, they entered the temple early in the morning and taught. But the high priest and those with him came and called the council together, with all the elders of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. 5:22 But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported, 5:23 saying, “Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing outside before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside” 5:24 Now when the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be. 5:25 So one came and told them, saying, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people” 5:26 Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. 5:27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, 5:28 saying, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us” 5:29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men. 5:30 “The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. 5:31 “Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 5:32 “And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.” 5:33 When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them. 5:34 Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while. 5:35 And he said to them: “Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding these men. 5:36 “For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing. 5:37 “After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed. 5:38 “And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; 5:39 “but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it-lest you even be found to fight against God.” 5:40 And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 5:41 So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. 5:42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
Acts Chapter 6 6:1 Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. 6:2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 6:3 “Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 6:4 “but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 6:5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6:6 whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them. 6:7 Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. 6:8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. 6:9 Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen. 6:10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. 6:11 Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 6:12 And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council. 6:13 They also set up false witnesses who said, “This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; 6:14 “for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.” 6:15 And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel.
Acts Chapter 7 7:1 Then the high priest said, “Are these things so?” 7:2 And he said, “Brethren and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran, 7:3 “and said to him, ‘Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.’ 7:4 “Then he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, when his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell. 7:5 “And God gave him no inheritance in it, not even enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no child, He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him. 7:6 “But God spoke in this way: that his descendants would dwell in a foreign land, and that they would bring them into bondage and oppress them four hundred years. 7:7 ‘And the nation to whom they will be in bondage I will judge,’ said God, ‘and after that they shall come out and serve Me in this place.’ 7:8 “Then He gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham begot Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot the twelve patriarchs. 7:9 “And the patriarchs, becoming envious, sold Joseph into Egypt. But God was with him 7:10 “and delivered him out of all his troubles, and gave him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house. 7:11 “Now a famine and great trouble came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers found no sustenance. 7:12 “But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first. 7:13 “And the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to the Pharaoh. 7:14 “Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob and all his relatives to him, seventy-five people. 7:15 “So Jacob went down to Egypt; and he died, he and our fathers. 7:16 “And they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. 7:17 “But when the time of the promise drew near which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt 7:18 “till another king arose who did not know Joseph. 7:19 “This man dealt treacherously with our people, and oppressed our forefathers, making them expose their babies, so that they might not live. 7:20 “At this time Moses was born, and was well pleasing to God; and he was brought up in his father’s house for three months. 7:21 “But when he was set out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him away and brought him up as her own son. 7:22 “And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds. 7:23 “Now when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel. 7:24 “And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended and avenged him who was oppressed, and struck down the Egyptian. 7:25 “For he supposed that his brethren would have understood that God would deliver them by his hand, but they did not understand. 7:26 “And the next day he appeared to two of them as they were fighting, and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brethren; why do you wrong one another?’ 7:27 “But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? 7:28 ‘Do you want to kill me as you did the Egyptian yesterday?’ 7:29 “Then, at this saying, Moses fled and became a dweller in the land of Midian, where he had two sons. 7:30 “And when forty years had passed, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire in a bush, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai. 7:31 “When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he drew near to observe, the voice of the Lord came to him, 7:32 “saying, ‘I am the God of your fathers-the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and dared not look. 7:33 ‘Then the Lord said to him, “Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. 7:34 “I have surely seen the oppression of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.” ‘ 7:35 “This Moses whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ is the one God sent to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the bush. 7:36 “He brought them out, after he had shown wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years. 7:37 “This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear.’ 7:38 “This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, the one who received the living oracles to give to us, 7:39 “whom our fathers would not obey, but rejected. And in their hearts they turned back to Egypt, 7:40 “saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 7:41 “And they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifices to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. 7:42 “Then God turned and gave them up to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the Prophets: ‘Did you offer Me slaughtered animals and sacrifices during forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? 7:43 You also took up the tabernacle of Moloch, And the star of your god Remphan, Images which you made to worship; And I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’ 7:44 “Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as He appointed, instructing Moses to make it according to the pattern that he had seen, 7:45 “which our fathers, having received it in turn, also brought with Joshua into the land possessed by the Gentiles, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers until the days of David, 7:46 “who found favor before God and asked to find a dwelling for the God of Jacob. 7:47 “But Solomon built Him a house. 7:48 “However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says: 7:49 ‘Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. What house will you build for Me? says the Lord, Or what is the place of My rest? 7:50 Has My hand not made all these things?’ 7:51 “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. 7:52 “Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers, 7:53 “who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it.” 7:54 When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. 7:55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 7:56 and said, “Look I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God” 7:57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; 7:58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. 7:59 And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 7:60 Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
Summary Verses 3:1 Peter and John go into the Temple and heal a crippled man. 3:9 People are gathered around because of the miracle. 3:12 Peter tells the people not to marvel at the miracle, but to believe on Christ Jesus for salvation. 3:19 Peter condemns the people for having Jesus crucified and calls them to repent and accept the Lord. 4:1 Peter and John are taken before the Sanhedrin because of the miracle. 4:7 There they speak boldly of Christ and His grace. 4:24 The disciples praise God and pray unto the Lord. 4:32 Many believers sell the possessions to help one another and have all things in common. 4:36 Barnabas who was a Levite from Cyprus was among them.
Acts Chapter 3 3:1 Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. 3:2 And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple; 3:3 who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms. 3:4 And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, “Look at us.” 3:5 So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. 3:6 Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” 3:7 And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. 3:8 So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them-walking, leaping, and praising God. 3:9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God. 3:10 Then they knew that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. 3:11 Now as the lame man who was healed held on to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the porch which is called Solomon’s, greatly amazed. 3:12 So when Peter saw it, he responded to the people: “Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 3:13 “The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let Him go. 3:14 “But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 3:15 “and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses. 3:16 “And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. 3:17 “Yet now, brethren, I know that you did it in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 3:18 “But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. 3:19 “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, 3:20 “and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before, 3:21 “whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began. 3:22 “For Moses truly said to the fathers, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, whatever He says to you. 3:23 ‘And it shall be that every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ 3:24 “Yes, and all the prophets, from Samuel and those who follow, as many as have spoken, have also foretold these days. 3:25 “You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ 3:26 “To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.”
Acts Chapter 4 4:1 Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them, 4:2 being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 4:3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4:4 However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand. 4:5 And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, 4:6 as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. 4:7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power or by what name have you done this?” 4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: 4:9 “If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 4:10 “let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 4:11 “This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ 4:12 “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. 4:14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. 4:15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, 4:16 saying, “What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 4:17 “But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.” 4:18 And they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 4:19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. 4:20 “For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.” 4:21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, because of the people, since they all glorified God for what had been done. 4:22 For the man was over forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed. 4:23 And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 4:24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 4:25 “who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: ‘Why did the nations rage, And the people plot vain things? 4:26 The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the Lord and against His Christ.’ 4:27 “For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together 4:28 “to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. 4:29 “Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 4:30 “by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.” 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. 4:32 Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. 4:33 And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. 4:34 Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, 4:35 and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need. 4:36 And Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus, 4:37 having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
Summary Verses 21:1 Jesus appears to His disciples as they were fishing. 21:6 The recognize Jesus only after He makes them to catch a large draught of fish. 21:15 Jesus charges Peter to feed His sheep. 21:18 Jesus foretells Peter’s death at the hands of the gentiles. 1:1 Luke ties this letter to his Gospel account. 1:9 Luke tells us of the ascension of Christ in front of hundreds of witnesses. 1:10 Two angels tell the people in like manner as He ascended Jesus shall return. 1:13 The Apostles take shelter together in the upper room and give themselves to prayer. 1:15 Peter stood and commanded the disciples that they should replace Judas Iscariot position. 1:26 Matthias was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot. 2:1 The Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit at the day of Pentecost. 2:8 The Apostles speak with the crowd, yet each man hears them in his own language. 2:12 Some men in the crowd thought the Apostles may be drunk, but they were not. 2:15 Peter then prophesies their doubt and dismisses that claim. 2:34 Peter then teaches the crowd that Jesus who they crucified was indeed the Christ. 2:37 Peter then exhorts the crowd to repent and accept Christ as their savior. 2:41 That day about three thousand souls were added to the church.
John Chapter 21 21:1 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: 21:2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 21:3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. 21:4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 21:5 Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They answered Him, “No.” 21:6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish. 21:7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. 21:8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. 21:9 Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 21:10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.” 21:11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 21:12 Jesus said to them, “Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”-knowing that it was the Lord. 21:13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. 21:14 This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead. 21:15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” 21:16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My sheep.” 21:17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 21:18 “Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 21:19 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.” 21:20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21:21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?” 21:22 Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” 21:23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?” 21:24 This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. 21:25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Acts Chapter 1 1:1 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 1:2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 1:3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. 1:4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 1:5 “for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 1:6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 1:7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 1:9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 1:10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 1:11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” 1:12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 1:13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. 1:15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, 1:16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; 1:17 “for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry.” 1:18 (Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out. 1:19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) 1:20 “For it is written in the book of Psalms: ‘Let his dwelling place be desolate, And let no one live in it’; and, ‘Let another take his office.’ 1:21 “Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 1:22 “beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.” 1:23 And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 1:24 And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 1:25 “to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” 1:26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
Acts Chapter 2 2:1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 2:3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 2:5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 2:6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 2:7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 2:8 “And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 2:9 “Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 2:10 “Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 2:11 “Cretans and Arabs-we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 2:12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?” 2:13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.” 2:14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 2:15 “For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 2:16 “But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 2:17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. 2:18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. 2:19 I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. 2:20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. 2:21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved.’ 2:22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 2:24 “whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. 2:25 “For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. 2:26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. 2:27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 2:28 You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’ 2:29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 2:30 “Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 2:31 “he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 2:32 “This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 2:33 “Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. 2:34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, 2:35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ‘ 2:36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 2:39 “For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” 2:40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” 2:41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 2:43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 2:44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 2:45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. 2:46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 2:47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
Summary Verses 19:1 Pilate took Jesus and had Him scourged. 19:2 The soldiers crowned Jesus with a crown of thorns. 19:4 Pilate had wanted to release Jesus. 19:7 The Jewish crowd instigated by the Pharisees and High Priest wanted Jesus dead. 19:16 Pilate delivers Jesus to the soldiers to be crucified. 19:26 Jesus commits His mother to the care of John. 19:30 Jesus dies on the cross. 19:34 Jesus side is pierced with a spear by the Roman soldier to confirm His death. 19:39 Nicodemus ask for the body of Jesus and buries Him in his tomb. 20:1 Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early on the first day of the week and the stone was rolled away. 20:3 Peter and John after hearing word from Mary run to the tomb and find it empty. 20:15 Jesus appears to Mary. 20:19 The disciples of Jesus were hid in a room and Jesus appears to them. 20:25 Jesus speaks to Thomas who had previously doubted His resurrection, Thomas now believes.
John Chapter 19 19:1 So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. 19:2 And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. 19:3 Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews” And they struck Him with their hands. 19:4 Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him.” 19:5 Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man” 19:6 Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him” Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.” 19:7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.” 19:8 Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, 19:9 and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 19:10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?” 19:11 Jesus answered, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.” 19:12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.” 19:13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 19:14 Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King” 19:15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him Crucify Him” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar” 19:16 Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led Him away. 19:17 And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 19:18 where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19:19 Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 19:20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. 19:21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ‘” 19:22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” 19:23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 19:24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.” Therefore the soldiers did these things. 19:25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son” 19:27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. 19:28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst” 19:29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. 19:31 Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 19:32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. 19:33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. 19:35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. 19:36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, “Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 19:37 And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.” 19:38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 19:39 And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 19:40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 19:41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 19:42 So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.
John Chapter 20 20:1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 20:2 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” 20:3 Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. 20:4 So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. 20:5 And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. 20:6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, 20:7 and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. 20:8 Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. 20:9 For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 20:10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes. 20:11 But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 20:12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 20:13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” 20:14 Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. 20:15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” 20:16 Jesus said to her, “Mary” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni” (which is to say, Teacher). 20:17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'” 20:18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her. 20:19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20:20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 20:21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 20:22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 20:23 “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” 20:24 Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 20:25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” 20:26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you” 20:27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” 20:28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God” 20:29 Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 20:30 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 20:31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
Summary Verses 17:1 Jesus prays that His glory and the glory of the Father are manifested on earth and through the salvation of souls. 17:9 Jesus prays for His Apostles and that He is glorified through them. 17:20 Jesus then prays for all believers who believe in Him by God’s word. 18:1 Jesus and His disciples enter the Garden of Gethsemane where Judas betrays Him. 18:13 Jesus is arrested and lead to Annas from Anna to Caiaphas. 18:22 The Temple officer strikes Jesus with a rod. 18:28 Jesus is delivered to Pontius Pilate. 18:36 Jesus declares His kingdom is not of this world.
John Chapter 17 17:1 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, 17:2 “as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. 17:3 “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 17:4 “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. 17:5 “And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. 17:6 “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. 17:7 “Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. 17:8 “For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me. 17:9 “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 17:10 “And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 17:11 “Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. 17:12 “While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 17:13 “But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. 17:14 “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17:15 “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 17:16 “They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17:17 “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 17:18 “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 17:19 “And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth. 17:20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 17:21 “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 17:22 “And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 17:23 “I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. 17:24 “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. 17:25 “O righteous Father The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. 17:26 “And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”
John Chapter 18 18:1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. 18:2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. 18:3 Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 18:4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?” 18:5 They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. 18:6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 18:7 Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 18:8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” 18:9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, “Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.” 18:10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. 18:11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?” 18:12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 18:13 And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 18:14 Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. 18:15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 18:16 But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 18:17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18:18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself. 18:19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine. 18:20 Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 18:21 “Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.” 18:22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?” 18:23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?” 18:24 Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 18:25 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not” 18:26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 18:27 Peter then denied again; and immediately a rooster crowed. 18:28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 18:29 Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?” 18:30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.” 18:31 Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 18:32 that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die. 18:33 Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” 18:34 Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?” 18:35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?” 18:36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.” 18:37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” 18:38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all. 18:39 “But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 18:40 Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas” Now Barabbas was a robber.
Summary Verses 15:1 Jesus tells the parable of the vine and the branches. 15:5 Jesus tells His disciples those who abide in Him, and He in them bear much fruit. 15:18 Jesus exhorts believers to bear afflictions patiently. 15:20 Jesus is an example of how to bear afflictions patiently. 16:1 Jesus foretells the disciples of future persecution. 16:7 Jesus promises to send the Comforter who is the Holy Spirit, that indeed unless He goes He cannot send the Comforter. 16:20 Jesus tells His disciples like a woman in labor they shall suffer pain; but then have rejoicing.
John Chapter 15 15:1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 15:2 “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 15:3 “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 15:4 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 15:6 “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 15:7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 15:8 “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. 15:9 “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 15:10 “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. 15:11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. 15:12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. 15:14 “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15:15 “No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 15:16 “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. 15:17 “These things I command you, that you love one another. 15:18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 15:19 “If you were of the world, the world would love its own. John Chapter 16 16:1 “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. 16:2 “They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. 16:3 “And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. 16:4 “But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you. 16:5 “But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 16:6 “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 16:7 “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 16:8 “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 16:9 “of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 16:10 “of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 16:11 “of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 16:12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 16:13 “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 16:14 “He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 16:15 “All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. 16:16 “A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, because I go to the Father.” 16:17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 16:18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is saying.” 16:19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 16:20 “Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. 16:21 “A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 16:22 “Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you. 16:23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 16:24 “Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. 16:25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. 16:26 “In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 16:27 “for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God. 16:28 “I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.” 16:29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech 16:30 “Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God.” 16:31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 16:32 “Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 16:33 “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
Summary Verses 13:4 Jesus girds himself with a towel and washes the feet of His disciples. 13:21 Jesus points out that Judas will betray Him. 13:31 Jesus tells His disciples now is the time for the Son of Man to be glorified because He knew He was going to the cross. 13:37 Jesus foretells of Peter’s denials of Jesus to come. 14:1 Jesus tells His disciples not be troubled for in His Father’s house there are many mansions and He is going to prepare a place for them. 14:7 Jesus comforts His disciples by telling them that knowing Him is knowing the Father. 14:16 Jesus promises to send the Comforter who is the Holy Spirit. 14:27 Jesus promises His disciples they shall have peace.
John Chapter 13 13:1 Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 13:2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, 13:3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 13:4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 13:5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 13:6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?” 13:7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.” 13:8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” 13:9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head” 13:10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 13:11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.” 13:12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13:13 “You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 13:14 “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 13:15 “For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 13:16 “Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 13:17 “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. 13:18 “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’ 13:19 “Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. 13:20 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” 13:21 When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.” 13:22 Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke. 13:23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 13:24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke. 13:25 Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 13:26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 13:27 Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 13:28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. 13:29 For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 13:30 Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night. 13:31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. 13:32 “If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately. 13:33 “Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. 13:34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 13:35 “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” 13:36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward.” 13:37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake.” 13:38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times.
John Chapter 14 14:1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 14:2 “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 14:3 “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 14:4 “And where I go you know, and the way you know.” 14:5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. 14:7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.” 14:8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.” 14:9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 14:10 “Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 14:11 “Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves. 14:12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 14:13 “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14:14 “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. 14:15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 14:16 “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever 14:17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 14:18 “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. 14:19 “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. 14:20 “At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 14:21 “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” 14:22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?” 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 14:24 “He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me. 14:25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 14:28 “You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I. 14:29 “And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. 14:30 “I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me. 14:31 “But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.
